Tectonic earthquake measuring 8.5 Richter Scale centered in the Indian Ocean (2.9 latitude and 95.6 east longitude at a depth of 20 km (in the sea is about 149 km southtown of Meulaboh ,Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam ).The quake was accompanied by a tidal wave ( tsunami) that swept some offshore areas in Indonesia (Aceh and North Sumatra), Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Maldives and Thailand.
According to the Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations (UN), Jan Egeland, the death toll from the tsunami storm in 13 countries reached 127,672 people. But the death toll in Southeast Asia, South Asia and East Africa will never be known, is estimated at least 150,000 people. The UN estimates that most of the additional deaths are in Indonesia. The reason, most of the obstructed humanitarian aid to enter because there are many isolated areas.
Meanwhile, data on the number of victims killed in the province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and North Sumatra by the Ministry of Social Affairs (11.1.2005) is 105,262 people. Meanwhile, according to news agency Reuters, the number of victims of the tsunami are estimated at 168,183 inhabitants with the most common victims of Indonesia, 115 229 (as of Sunday, 16.1.2005). The total wounded as many as 124,057 people, an estimated 100,000 of them experienced by the people of Aceh and North Sumatra.
